We have lead responsibility in Government for policy on spectrum. This covers the airwaves used for transmitting information, including radio, television, mobile phone calls and data.

This includes:

  • liaising with Ofcom on all spectrum policy matters
  • taking a lead role in determining the UK’s position in European and international forums on spectrum matters
  • working with the Shareholder Executive to ensure the release of spectrum held by the public sector
  • co-chairing the United Kingdom Spectrum Strategy Committee, the senior official committee on spectrum policy

Ofcom is responsible for managing civilian use of the radio spectrum, which covers:

  • releasing spectrum for new uses 
  • developing policies to ensure that the spectrum is used efficiently 
  • dealing with interference issues
