doping in sport

We are committed to stopping the use of performance enhancing drugs and other methods of cheating in sport, known as doping.

The government is signed up to the UNESCO International Convention against Doping in Sport, and supports the World Anti-Doping Agency and its World Anti-Doping Code. This code is an international set of rules and guidelines, developed to standardise the way doping is dealt with across all sports and countries.

UK Anti-Doping

UK Anti-Doping is responsible for the UK’s anti-doping programme. This includes:

  • making sure that athletes and their support personnel are aware of their roles and responsibilities with regards to anti-doping
  • making sure that  sports comply with the UK National Anti-Doping Policy
  • testing athletes for substances on WADA’s prohibited list
  • sharing information with law enforcement agencies in order to identify people who traffic and supply performance enhancing drugs
  • deciding whether athletes and support personnel have a case to answer and presenting the evidence to an independent tribunal for adjudication
