Department for Culture Media and Sport

gambling and racing

We are responsible for the law regulating gambling and racing, and we sponsor the gambling and racing industries.

The Gambling Act 2005 regulates commercial gambling in Great Britain, including arcades, betting, bingo, casinos, gaming machines, society lotteries and remote gambling operations based in the UK. It has three principle objectives:

  • keeping gambling crime free
  • making sure that gambling is fair and open
  • protecting children and vulnerable adults

Day-to-day activities of the gambling industry are regulated by the Gambling Commission.

We are also responsible for government policy relating to horse racing and greyhound racing in Great Britain. We are the sponsor department for the racing industry. The racing industry itself is regulated by independent bodies.

National Lottery

We are responsible for National Lottery policy, including legislation.

Problem gambling

We work with the Gambling Commission to make sure that problem gambling is adequately understood and researched and that our policies help gambling businesses act in a socially responsible way towards their customers.
